(Voltri 1606–1657 Genoa)
Saint Jerome
oil on canvas, 69.5 x 89 cm, framed
Provenance:
Collection Senator Felice Bensa (1878–1943), Genoa;
European Private Collection
Orazio de’Ferrari often painted religious subjects, including devotional altarpieces. His most characteristic works are often tender and suggest devotional piety with the scene set against a dark background, such as the present painting. As here his figures are typically well-defined with intense facial expressions set in areas of shadow. The present figure of Saint Jerome is close to Gioacchino Assereto’s muscular figures also apparent in Orazio´s dramatic Capture of Samson (circa 1650; Pinacoteca Civica, Ascoli Piceno).
Orazio de´Ferrari works are also characterised by his loose and open brushwork; and with its warm and luminous tones the present work displays the influence that Rubens had on Genoese painting. Rubens had been in Genoa between 1604-1606.
