Joost Cornelisz. Droochsloot
(Utrecht 1586–1666)
Mercenaries entering a town, signed and dated lower left: J. Drooeg Sloot.1646,
oil on panel, 60.5 x 98.5 cm, framed
Provenance:
with Fritz Seiler, Berlin, 1936;
from whom it was purchased by the family of the present owners
Joost Cornelisz. Droochsloot specialised in the depiction of village landscapes, which, during his early period, relied on the works of Esaias van de Velde. The village road was lined by rows of houses and creates the picture’s depth which is a typical feature of Droochsloot’s art. A dark house on one side of the picture augments the illusion of depth.
