We are grateful to Nicola Spinosa for confirming the attribution.
Spinosa dates the present painting to around 1632, the year to which two other paintings by Ribera of the same subject matter have been given (Galleria Corsini, Rome, and Museo de Bellas Artes, Sevilla see N. Spinosa Ribera, Milan, 2006, p. 314-315, A 146). Other works from around this period, include Democrites (Prado, Madrid) signed in 1630.
Around this time Ribera works display a new, freer style, showing the renewed influence of Venetian painting, which was also apparent in work in Rome at that time, as well as displaying his knowledge of the paintings of Rubens and van Dyck in the collections of the nobility and the Flemish merchants established in Naples.
