The present composition is by the same hand as the painting Saint Francis Receiving the Stigmata in the De Young Museum in San Francisco (inv. no. 54.34), which in turn is linked to Joos van Cleves’ Lamentation in the Louvre, Paris. Due to their almost identical dimensions, the two paintings may have been conceived as pendants. The present Saint Jerome is based on a prototype by Joos van Cleve that was formerly in the Muskegon Museum of Art in Muskegon, Michigan (see J. Hand, Joos van Cleve, The Complete Paintings, Yale 2005, S. 121, Kat. Nr. 12.1).
