(Cherepovets 1842–1904 Port-Arthur)
Group of Arabian Horsemen, monogrammed lower right, upper left inventory stamp of the Prince Putyatin Collection (beneath mantle with crown, heart shield split, 1: Greek cross 2: Four beams in the shape of a W) surrounded by the Cyrillic letters KPAP, numbered 24, on the reverse inscribed in pencil (Cyrillic): V. Verescagin/Palestinian Album/Meeting on the Mountain Pass (indistinctly); various notes in pencil from a later date, pencil on paper, framed, 19.5 x 27.5 cm, (Sch)
Provenance:
Prince Putyatin Collection, Christie’s London, 7 July 2000, lot 53;
Private property, Prague.
The lightness of this sketch’s execution dates it clearly to the years 1883–1884, the period in which Vereshchagin travelled through Syria and Palestine. The artist spent a large part of his life travelling through the Orient, and the interest displayed in this artist by the collector and prominent Russian ethnographer, archaeologist and anthropologist Nikolai Abramovich Putyatin, was by no means coincidental.
