Francis Pieter Peters was the son and pupil of the glass painter of the same name. He moved to Germany in 1836, living in Mannheim for several years before working in Stuttgart from 1845. In Stuttgart King Wilhelm provided him with a studio in the old castle and he became a travelling companion to Queen Olga. He travelled through Upper Bavaria, Tyrol, Switzerland and Northern Italy. In Stuttgart he founded a permanent art exhibition together with the painter Hermann Herdtle which also led to intensive interaction and the exchange of paintings with artist friends in Munich. Between 1896 and 1903 Peters spent four summer with his family at Köngen castle, southeast of Stuttgart where he painted. The castle has a considerable collection of works by the Peters family, as does the Braith-Mali Museum in Biberach an der Riss. Peters’ pupils included his daughters Anna and Pietronello, as well as his brother-in-law Christian Mali. Initially influenced by Dutch Romanticism, his later paintings were almost Impressionist in style. He executed landscape studies with great atmospheric presence.
