In the form of a Tropaion, 17th/18th century. Fully and naturalistically carved sandstone figure of a Roman general with various attributes of war (sword, armour, helmet etc.) and of peace (sheep head). Approx. 160 x 130 x 70 cm. Some chips and restored area with some weathering. (DOC)
The Tropaion in ancient Greece was a monument to victory – comprising weapons and armour at the location of the battle. In Roman times this became a depiction of weapons, armour and military colours on the triumphal arch; in the Baroque period it became a collection and depiction on castles (mostly on the ridging), fully sculpted or in relief, in order to celebrate the military fame of the monarch.
See.: similar sandstone sculptures on Potsdam castle and on the Gloriette (Schönbrunn castle).
