Princess Maria Piccolomini bought Schloss Hetzendorf in 1675. It was resold in 1690 and following remodelling, it was lived in by Franz Sigismund, Count von Thun und Hohenstein, Countess Eleonore von Thun und Hohenstein with her husband, Anton Florian, Prince von und zu Liechtenstein.
In 1742 it was acquired for Maria Theresa and was lived in by Emperor Joseph II, Prince Elector and Archbishop of Cologne, Archduke Maximilian Franz of Austria, the Queen of Naples and Sicily, Maria Carolina of Austria, Emperor Franz Josef I and Archduke Karl.
The state rooms and the ballroom are decorated with frescos by important artists, and the Mirror Gallery is lined with portraits of members of the dynasty by well-known painters.
The subsidiary buildings and outbuildings have been used by the fashion school, Hetzendorf since 1946;
