Unusually large Library Globe Splendid Frame
Berlin 1871, cartouches of the south-west and Australia, "ERDGLOBUS / nach dem Entwurf / v. C. Adami / im Verhältnis von 1:16,5000.00 der natürlichen Größe / bearbeitet u. gezeichnet / von / DR. HEINRICH KIEPERT / Berlin 1871/ DIETRICH REIMER. / Stich und Druck d. Lith. Anst. v. Leopold Kraatz." 24 lithographs, coloured paper-half segments on paper-maché globe with plaster base, the continents and islands with blue coastal border, "steam boat course, sailing course, Europe, America, Trading ports in East Asia", discoveries at the South Pole by Cook, Ross, Bellingshausen and others. The frame of carved wood with applied mouldings, painted gold, tripod base with lion paw feet, acanthus-leaf ornamentation and brass dials; four arms hold the octagonal latitudinal ring; coloured paper overlays show the gradations, 32 points of the compass, signs of the zodiac, monthly divisions and ornamental etchings alternate with allegorical depictions in the eight corners. The wooden meridian ring, one side with lithographed gradations, is mounted on metal rollers for better rotation and both compass points are mounted on metal rollers. Original unrestored condition. Damage to the globe and frame (with attestation of restoration) dia c. 71 cm, height c. 165 cm. (WU).
