Lot No. 680 #

Thomas Schwanthaler,

Thomas Schwanthaler, - Works of Art (Furniture, Sculpture, Glass and porcelain)

(1634 -1707 Ried im Innkreis), Masterly Baroque Pair of Angels, c. 1670-80, limewood carved in the round, polychrome painted and gilded, height 130 and 150 cm, the paintwork has been restored and is peeling in places, (MC)

Provenance: Munich Private Collection.

Thomas Schwanthaler was born in 1634 in Ried im Innkreis and took over his father’s workshop at the age of 22. He ranks as one of the most important sculptors of the second half of the 17th Century in Upper Austria. His most renowned work is the large double altar in the church of St. Wolfgang am Abersee from the year 1676. The angels offered here are comparable with the putto of the Benedict Altar in Maria Plain, Salzburg, as well as with the angels and Jesus Childs of the double alter in St. Wolfgang. They have similar head shapes and expressions; the strong dynamic bodies of the children are typical of his formative years, as is the strongly curling, blazing hair.
