An important c. 1750 brass horizontal Garden Sundial - Clocks, Metalwork, Faience, Folk Art, Sculptures +Antique Scientific Instruments and Globes

made by Joseph Jackson in London for the British Consul in Venice Joseph Smith (c. 1682–1770). The circular base signed “Joseph Smith / LONDON.” and engraved with the coat of arms of Joseph Smith, the latitude for Venice “Lat. D 45 M 33”, hour and minute scales, brass gnomon. Diameter c. 31 cm, height c. 17 cm. (WU).

Joseph Smith (c. 1682–1770), British Consul and banker, collector, connoisseur and patron of famous artists like Canaletto and Zuccarelli owned the today called Palazzo Smith Mangilli Valmarana in Venice and a villa in Mogliano Veneto, where the offered sundial was most likely originally mounted. Provenance: Spanish private collection.
