Josef Ritter von Führich
(Kratzau 1800-1876 Vienna) Christ falling under the Cross the Second Time, study for VIIth station of the Praque way of the cross chapels (1836), pencil on paper, 76 x 50 cm, browned, mounted, framed, (Sch)
The present drawing is related to the painting “Christ falling under the Cross the Second Time” in the VIIth chapel of the Praque way of the cross by Führich on Laurenzerberg in Prague and executed in 1836. The study may be a preliminary drawing for a series of engravings which Führich made after his paintings; the painting of station VII is considerably smaller (34,5 x 25,3) than the prints (dimensions of sheets 49 x 32). The drawing is almost identical with the depiction of the engraving. While in the drawing the artist put more emphasis on the conturlines, in the engraving he concentrated more in modelling with hatches.
