Provenance: Private Collection, France.

Jan Martszen de Jonge was the nephew and pupil of Esaias van de Velde (1587-1630) and became the teacher of Jan Asselijn (1610-1652). Beisdes portraits and landscapes he apinted staffage figures in paintings by Bartholmäus van Bassen (1590-1652); however, he became most famous for his numerous battle scenes, which were often confused with paintings by Abraham van der Hoef (1611-1666). Comparable drawings by Jan Martszen are preserved in the Herzog Anton Ulrich-Museum, Brunswick (Inv. Z 559), the Hamburg Kunsthalle (Inv. 1963/298) and the Teylers Museum, Haarlem (Inv. P 9).
