Ernst Hodel was a well-known Swiss landscape painter. Together with his son Ernst Hodel Jr., he created the so-called Alpineum, an exhibition of large-format Alpine views which was opened in 1901, a year before his death. The Pilatus Railway shown here is the steepest rack railway in the world and this year celebrates its 125th anniversary. In this work Hodel depicts the achievements of the engineers and how they overcame natural obstacles.
