throne cover, China, c. 58 (65) x 65 (73) cm, beginning of the 18th century, silk and gold embroidery with cotton core on fine silk ground, this piece once served as seat padding for a throne at the court of the Ching dynasty, it probably belonged to the Chinese imperial family. Classic peony blossoms as central motif, surrounded by lotus flowers, bats and foliate tendrils, very archaic, contrasting border frame with bat and cloud bands in alternating repeat, excellent condition, mounted in a European wooden frame behind glass. (MA) Provenance: K & K Marine Officer Count Olivier Resseguier de Miremont brought it with him around 1900 at the time of the Boxer Rebellion, since then in Austrian private ownership.
