Netherlands, c. 355 x 410 cm, third quarter of the 17th century, Samson and Delilah, after a cartoon by Peter Paul Rubens; typical of these works is the merging of the image with the massive Rubens columns, the pictorial effect is more dramatic since the frame character is lost by omitting the borders and the scene becomes more realistic, towards the end of the 17th century the style changed and the columns were eliminated, they are woven with floral, fruity borders and the image displays a rather unsettled, disjointed surface effect. The carpet depicts an Old Testament scene involving the invincible Israelite Samson who temporarily lost his strength after Delilah, a member of the Philistine tribe, shore his hair; as soon as his hair grew back, however, Samson destroyed the Philistines’ temple. Important, monumental tapestry in silk and wool weaving with some damage, added parts and several repairs, very lively figures and facial expressions, right galloon almost completely preserved, remaining ends trimmed short, linen on the reverse is in need of repair.
