Northwest Persian woven fragment,
Iran, c. 180 (195) x 172 (196) cm, 17th/18th century, this piece can be hardly ascribed to a specific region as a result of its wool foundation and lack of similar reference pieces - it might also have been manufactured in the Caucasus, the narrow arrow border, the band of clouds framing the large central medallions and the primitive “Afshan” structure suggest an early dating, former Kelley format cut in the upper section, brown corroded until the foundation in some parts, entirely mounted on linen. (MA) Lit.: James D. Burns, Antique Rugs of Kurdistan, plate 43.
