We are grateful to Nuno Saldanha for confirming the authenticity of the present painting on the basis of a photograph. According to Saldanha, the present work is one of the rare paintings made during Pillement’s brief stay in Italy in 1762, before he worked at the imperial court in Vienna in 1763.
Jean-Baptiste Pillement was born the son of the ornament designer Paul in 1728. Jean-Baptiste himself worked for a long time as a cartoon designer for the Gobelins tapestry factory in Paris and is known for his landscape and marine subjects, although he also made a name for himself as a flower painter and ornament designer, particularly of rocaille. Journeys led him, among other places, to Madrid, where he lived for three years, as well as to Lisbon, Turin, Milan, Rome, Vienna, and Warsaw.
