The painter Louis de Caullery was probably born in in Caullery near Cambrai. Around 1594 he was apprenticed to Joos de Momper in Antwerp. Only five signed paintings by him are known. The major part of his output is attributed to him due to stylistic characteristics. He also painted topographical views of Rome and Venice, so that it is assumed that he travelled to Italy. His favourite subject matter, however, are gallant scenes set at banquets or feasts, many of which can be associated with an allegorical meaning. Inventories of 17th-century collections in Antwerp list numerous works by his hand, which attests to his great popularity among contemporaries.
