A ‘Magic Mushroom’ set, designed by Wolfgang Joop - Design

2013, for Wiener Silber Manufactur, silver 940/1000, all parts hallmarked: 925 and with clover leaf signet, walnut, six parts: centrepiece: 30 x 14 cm, blusher: height 9 cm, diameter 6 cm, morel: height 16 cm, diameter 5.5 cm, common mushroom: height 8.5 cm, diameter 6 cm, porcino: height 11 cm, diameter 7 cm, small fly amanita: height 11 cm, diameter 7 cm. (DRAX)

No. 3 from the planned limited edition of 50 sets.

A branch structure cast in silver supports a stand of oiled walnut. The mushrooms are held by small magnets. The ensemble recalls decorative Baroque centrepieces, which also had a dual function of ornament and spice dish. The source of inspiration for the mushroom vessels, which can be filled with spices or essences, was the story of "Alice in Wonderland", in which Alice tastes the "Magic Mushroom" and consequently the world wondrously changes.

"For me, mushrooms are mysterious wonders of nature, growing forth from the forest ground like jewels. Finding them is like digging for jewellery, while you also might hit a vein of silver…! Art is born where reality has reached its limits. It is fascinating to simulate objects of nature in silver, to endow them with functionality and immortality." (Wolfgang Joop)
