China, Qing dynasty, 19th century.
Quadrangular, trapeze-shaped, the finial made of celadon-grey jade, the wooden handle inlaid with silver wire. One side chased with bamboo branches and the inscription, “At the beginning bamboo shrubs, then nodules and finally young leaves”, signed: “He Xiang”. On the other side the inscription, “‘Great fortune to Prince Yang Yi’, characters from an old inscription in the Flying Clouds Pavilion.” Impressed (illegible) potter’s seal on the inside. Traces of usage. H: 9 cm. (BA)
