(Vienna 1928-2000 Pacific Ocean, on board the Queen Elizabeth II)
"Die Flucht des Dalai-Lama" (Flight of the Dalai Lama), colour lithograph, signed, probably later by hand, Hundertwasser, dated 1959on the stone, one of ca. 1.800 copies, long version cut apart in the middle, mount cut-out 26,5 x 115,5 cm, in mount, framed, Koschatzky/Fürst HWG 15b, (EH)
"If Tibet had been an independent country until 1951, it was then occupied by the Chinese People’s Republic, against which a rebellion broke out in 1959; this was put down harshly and the religious head of this monastic state was forced into a precipitate flight. The Dalai-Lama became a martyr to the all-powerful force of communism. Carl László, an extremely energetic art dealer in Basel, had a Dalai Lama edition of the journal Panderma produced with which an original lithograph by Hundertwasser on the subject of the Dalai Lama’s flight was included. The artist designed the sheet so that, when cut through across the middle with the lower part glued to the left of the upper part creating a landscape format which could be folded, it could be enclosed." (Walter Koschatzky, Friedensreich Hundertwasser, Zürich und Schwäbisch Hall 1986, page 50)
