Berggren was trained as a carpenter in Stockholm. In 1855, he travelled around Europe and had himself trained as a photographer in Hamburg. In 1866, he settled in Constantinople and in the 1870s opened a photo-studio where he was assisted by his niece the Hilda Ullin.
