The work was executed at Villa Maggio, in Valsassina (c.f. the acronym V. M.), where the artist spent time from July to September 1950. It was during that year that the Biennale, Venice paid homage to his work. The inscription verso, which reads ‘Maggio’, refers to the villa rather than the month (‘Maggio’ also meaning ‘May’ in Italian). It has often been assumed that it made reference to the latter.
