Born in Kopenhagen in 1938, the geologist, painter, object builder, film maker, author, and professor in Frankfurt is the most important internationally known Danish artist. Though Kirkeby set out as a painter, his work now includes bronze sculptures, brick buildings, and literary works; he has made several films and realized a number of installations and performances in his early career. The universe of his art still centers around painting but encompasses a large number of new possibilities.
