Lot No. 883

Darmstadt court painter about 1760

Darmstadt court painter about 1760 - Old Master Paintings

An elegant party in a park landscape,
monogrammed lower right: FR,
oil on canvas, 49 x 117.5 cm, framed

Different attributions to Johann Conrad Seekatz, Christian Georg Schütz the Elder, Johann Andreas Herrlein and Johann Christian Fiedler have already been suggested for this painting. There is no doubt as to its belonging to the immediate context of the so-called “Frankfurter Goethemaler” group and the highly developed Darmstadt court art of the mid-18th century. The attribution to Seekatz appears especially convincing.

The depiction of the elegant party in the right half of the picture is very similar to a comparable composition by Seekatz, the Elegant Party drinking coffee at the National gallery in Prague (inventory no. DO 5382, cf. E. Emmerling, Johann Conrad Seekatz, Landau 1991, p. 92, cat. no. 128). Seekatz varied the motif again in one of the overdoors for Braunshardt castle. The present painting is also an overdoor. It was without doubt intended for the decoration of a castle or mansion.
