Johann Samuel Hoetzendorf

Johann Samuel Hoetzendorf - Old Master Paintings

(Sulzbach 1694–1742 Vienna)
Vast Italian landscape,
signed lower right: Hoezendorff f.,
oil on canvas, 63.5 x 96.5 cm, framed

Provenance:
according to tradition, from the John Hunter Collection, Hunter Mansion, Pelham/New York (vor 1866);
American private collection.

Signed works by this Viennese landscape painter are rare. After his training with the Munich landscape painter Joachim Franz Beich, Hoetzendorf sojourned in Rome from 1720 to 1723. Monsignor Falconieri commissioned paintings for his villa in Frascati. In 1723 Hoetzendorf moved to Vienna. During the following years, his most important patrons were the abbot and the monastery of the Benedictine abbey of Göttweig in Lower Austria. The present work clearly demonstrates the influence of Italian landscape painters of the time, particularly Andrea Locatelli and Filippo Lauri.
