Lot No. 868

Manner of Sir Anthony van Dyck

Lady Dorothy Sydney (1617–1684), Lady Spencer, later Countess of Sunderland,
oil on canvas, 110 x 80 cm, framed

The present painting is based on Van Dyck’s portrait of Lady Dorothy Spencer in the Viscount de L’Isle Collection, Penshurst Place, in slightly different format. In 1635 Lady Dorothy Sydney rejected a marriage proposal from the poet Edmund Waller, who had composed numerous verses in her honour. In 1963 she married Henry, 3dr Lord Spencer of Wormleighton, who was created 1st Earl of Sunderland in 1643. The present painting depicts her in the guise of a shepherdess, holding a hoe and a pink rose, an attribute of Venus, the love goddess. Lord Spencer was killed in the first battle of Newbury, leaving her pregnant and with two children. She lived in Brington, Northamptonshire, and probably returned to her family home at Penshurst Place in Kent.
