Franz Carl Stauder
(c. 1660–64 in Switzerland - 1714 Solothurn)
Lot and his Daughters,
lower left signed and dated: Carlo Stauder.invenit.pinxit.1689.,
oil on canvas, 114 x 163, unframed
Franz Carl Stauder was a member of a Swiss dynasty of artists, but also active in Germany. In the church of the former Benedictine Abbey of Obermarchtal he designed two side altars: The Sermon of John the Baptist (1688), and Saint Agatha (1698). In 1690 Stauder fled to Switzerland to evade military service, and worked mainly in Solothurn and Lucerne. It can be assumed that Stauder undertook journeys to Italy, probably Venice, during his studies, which would explain the presence in his paintings of a typically Venetian choice of colours and their treatment. The present painting is, according to Erich Schleier, atypical of Stauder’s oeuvre, who predominantly worked for monasteries and churches.
