We are grateful to Brian Allen for his suggestion of the attribution to Lemuel Francis Abbott.
Abbot is among the most significant portrait artists of the English admiralty. His best known work is probably the portrait of Lord Nelson, currently in the Terracotta Room, Downing Street no. 10, London.
