Jean Baptiste Hilaire
(Audun-le-Tiche 1753 - after 1822 Paris)
An elegant group in an Arcadian park,
oil on panel, 28.3 x 37.5 cm, framed
The preparatory drawing for this painting is preserved in the Seligmann Collection, Paris, and was auctioned at Sotheby’s London on 3 July 1989 as lot 154. The present work by Hilaire, who in his time was in demand as a painter, draughtsman and copper engraver, depicts an imaginary landscape that expresses a nostalgia for the rural ideal derived from Watteau. As an important student of Jean Baptiste Le Prince, in his younger years Hilaire already exhibited in the Paris Salon, before his most important patron, the Comte de Choiseul, brought him on a trip through the Levant and to the Ottoman court. The drawings created on this trip founded his great popularity. Only few of Hilaire’s paintings have been preserved. The present work displays all the features that contemporary critics appreciated in his oeuvre, especially its peaceful atmosphere and delicate, smooth colouration.
