In 2003, Fred Meijer of the RKD confirmed the present painting as an autograph work of the landscape painter Anthony Jansz. van der Croos. Huis ter Nieuwburch near Rijswijk was one of the most popular subjects of this artist’s oeuvre. There are at least ten known other slightly different versions of this composition. Huis ter Nieuwburch, built in 1630–34 for the stadtholder Frederick Henry Prince of Orange, was one of the favourite residences of the members of the House of Orange in the 17th and 18th centuries. It was demolished in 1785.
