Follower of Lucas Cranach the Elder,
An ill-matched couple,
oil on panel, 22 x 16 cm, framed
The depiction of couples of different ages was popular in the paintings of the 16th century. An indecent motivation had to be uncovered and denounced. The type of the ill-matched couple established itself very early as a frequently recurring pictorial motif in Cranach’s studio. The earliest examples are those in the Ill-matched Lovers, dated 1522, in the Szépmüvészeti Museum in Budapest. Later examples are located in the Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Vienna (1531), in the Prague Rudolfinum (c. 1530) and in the Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nuremberg (c. 1530). The style and composition of the present painting are manifestly modelled after Lucas Cranach the Elder’s depiction of this subject (dated to c. 1530), formerly in the Munich art trade. The young woman’s red dress and pearl-embroidered hair net were also used in other versions.
