Jan van Bunnik - Old Master Paintings

Mediterranean coastal landscape with war ships at anchor,
oil on canvas, 38.6 x 54.2 cm, framed

In 1668, Jan van Bunnik began a three-year training with Herman Saftleven. He subsequently travelled through Germany and Switzerland to Italy. After sojourns in Milan and Genoa he moved to Rome, where he soon came into contact with his countrymen and fellow painters. Bunnik later travelled to Naples, Rome, Bologna and finally Modena, where Francesco III d’Este appointed him painter to the ducal court. In later years, after a sojourn in Lyon, he returned to the Netherlands, where the stadtholder William III of Orange commissioned him to decorate Het Loo Palace.
