Philippe de Momper was the son and pupil of Josse de Momper and the brother of the painter Frans de Momper. He sojourned in Italy, together with Jan Brueghel the Younger, between 1622 and 1624. In 1624 he became a member of the Guild of Saint Luke in Antwerp. Since no signed paintings executed by him are known, it is hard to assess the actual extent of his oeuvre. Nonetheless, a few paintings were auctioned as authentic works by Philip de Momper over the past years (cf Christie’s auction, New York, 11 January 1989, lot 27, and Christie’s auction, London, 4 July 2012, lot 135).
