Abraham Begeyn

Abraham Begeyn - Old Master Paintings

(Leiden c. 1635–1697 Berlin)
Southern landscape with shepherds and their flock,
oil on canvas, 80 x 96 cm, framed

Provenance:
Private collection, Switzerland;
Dorotheum auction, Vienna, 12 June 2001, lot 104;
Private collection, Vienna

Literature:
K. J. Müllenmeister, Meer und Land im Licht des 17. Jahrhunderts, vol. 2, Bremen 1978, p. 22, no. 13 (with slightly diverging dimensions)

Müllenmeister writes; “The artist’s autograph work reproduced here is a painting, the focus of which is not just the depiction of a landscape. The delicately added staffage of shepherds with their animals pervades the foreground with an atmosphere of peace and tranquillity. Southern light falls on the scene from the left, without the usual hard shadows [...]”

The present painting, for which Dr Walther Bernt wrote a certificate in 1971 (attributing it to Abraham Begeyn), is not signed and appears in the databank of the RKD (no. 122724) as “attributed to Abraham Begeyn”. Ms Ellis Dullaart of the RKD, to whom we are grateful for her kind assistance, pointed out that the authenticity of this painting has never been questioned in the literature.
