We are grateful to Dr Francesca Baldassari for identifying the present painting as an autograph work by Dandini. A certificate written by Dr Baldassari is enclosed.
As an allegory of generosity, the present painting is an interesting mixture of portraiture and moral message. It depicts the Grand Duchess surrounded by jewels and earthly riches, including the archducal crown. In the foreground, a putto holds an inscribed band towards the viewer with the following motto: “NON LASSAR LA MAGNANIMA TUA IMPRESA”. It is a quotation from the last line of the seventh verse in Petrarch’s Canzoniere. The subject is therefore the personification of the virtue of generosity in the image of a princess. Vittoria della Rovere was the last member of her family and heiress presumptive to the Duchy of Urbino. After the death of her husband, Ferdinand II, she exerted considerable influence on her son Cosimo III, de facto ruling over the Grand Duchy of Tuscany on his behalf.
