Walther Bernt writes thus about Wijnants: “His favourite landscapes are hilly terrains covered in bushes and trees with meandering dirt roads populated by farmers, shepherds, riders and hunters. The mountainous backgrounds have at times a southern flair, with houses or ruins as staffage. The foreground often displays conspicuous fallen tree trunks, or a large tree stump and herbs with large leaves. The dominant colour is a delicate, brown-grey hue”. The figural staffage of this painting was executed by Johannes Lingelbach.
