The present painting is characteristic workmanship of the so-called Pseudo Pier Francesco Fiorentino or the “Lippi-Pesellino imitators”. In 1958 Federico Zeri was the first to see in the Pseudo Pier Francesco Fiorentino not one artist, but rather - not least of all due to the extensiveness of the oeuvre - a group of artists or workshops he called “Lippi-Pesellino imitators”. By means of cartoons, these artists reproduced compositions by Fra Filippo Lippi and Francesco Pesellino, or they combined parts taken from different compositions by the two artists.
