Paolo Pagani

Paolo Pagani - Old Master Paintings

(Castello Valsolda circa 1661–1716 Milan)
Rape of the Sabine Women,
oil on canvas, 84.5 x 119.5 cm, framed

We are grateful to Francesco Frangi for confirming the attribution of the present painting on the basis of a high resolution digital photograph.

The present painting is a characteristic work by Pagani, who rendered the nude female figure as a firm and rounded form.

Pagani arrived in Venice, in 1667 and remained there until 1690. He was first registered in the list of local painters in 1685. In 1697 he returned to Valsolda, where he executed frescoes in the church of San Martino. Towards the end of his life, the artist was in Milan. The present painting seems to date from this period and is stylistically related to his works Semele and Jupiter in the Moravska Galerie, Brno, and The Fall of the Giants in the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Tours.
