Antoine Monnoyer

Antoine Monnoyer - Old Master Paintings

(Lille 1671–1747 Saint Germain-en-Laye)?
A still life of flowers with fruit, a parrot and a squirrel,
signed at lower left: Baptiste,
oil on canvas, 76.7 x 115.5 cm, framed

We are grateful to Dr.. Claudia Salvi, for her extensive certificate and for confirming the authenticity of the present painting.

Antoine Monnoyer travelled to England several times in the company of his father, where he became one of the most successful still life painters of his time. Documents attest to further travels abroad, such as to Italy and Sweden (decoration of the Royal Palace in Stockholm). Monnoyer refined the type of still life that had earlier been introduced at Versailles by his father. He was influenced in this by such artists as Simon Hardimé. The signature ‘Baptiste’ appears in several of the artist’s works and can be understood as a promotional means employed by the son, who was eager to continue his father’s success.
