(Antwerp 1561–1631)
A pair of mountainous river landscapes with numerous figures and the Fall of Icarus,
one dated: 1600,
oil on panel, each 57 x 42 cm, framed (2)
Verhaecht came from a well-known family of painters in Antwerp. His landscapes were still committed to the Mannerist tradition. Stylistically, he was therefore a traditional painter of his generation. Dependent on the compositions of Gillis van Coninxloos and his circle, this work also displays the impact of Joos de Momper’s oeuvre.
Little is known about Verhaecht’s training as an artist. Before becoming a master in the Guild of Saint Luke in Antwerp in 1590/91, he sojourned in Italy for an extensive period of time and was highly successful in Florence and Rome. In 1594 he returned to Antwerp, where he was appointed dean and superintendent of the guild. In 1594 he contributed to the design of the decorations made to celebrate the entrance of Archduke Ernest as governor in Antwerp. Numerous students are documented to have entered Verhaecht’s large workshop between 1591 and 1612. The most prominent among them was Peter Paul Rubens, who spent parts of his apprenticeship with Verhaecht.
