Lot No. 506

Roman School, early 17th Century

Roman School, early 17th Century - Old Master Paintings

Ceres and Bacchus,
oil on canvas, 107 x 91 cm, framed

Provenance:
European Private Collection

The present painting is a rare example of Roman still life with figures dating from the beginning of the seventeenth century, ante 1630. The fruits, especially melons, peaches, pears, pomegranates, figs and grapes, are arranged in a balanced but varied pattern on a stone ledge, and they are painted with a great interest in naturalism together with strong contrasts of light and dark. Similar compositional patterns and characters can be seen in the Roman Caravaggesque still-life tradition, as in the works of the Master of the Acquavella Still Life, Tommaso Salini and Agostino Verrocchi.

An attribution to Pietro Paolo Bonzi, called Gobbo dei Carracci (Cortona c. 1576- Rome 1636) has been suggested by Dr. Andrea G. De Marchi
