rectangular body with polychrome painted image, ‘Cupid untying the zone of Venus’ after Sir Joshua Reynolds, inscribed verso, monogrammed in pen, Robert Theer, 15 x 17 cm, framed 29 x 32 cm, Vienna, Imperial Manufactory, impressed shield mark, year mark 1849, turner no. 33 Johann Binder 1831–1865 (Ru)

Lit.: Wurzbach, Robert Theer 1808–1863, portrait painter and lithographer, brother of Adolf and Albert, son of the gemstone carver, Joseph Theer. The original painting by J. Reynolds, 1st version is entitled, ‘A Nymph and Cupid’ and was exhibited in 1784 at the Royal Academy. It is now held at the Tate Gallery. In 1788 Reynolds reproduced this theme for Lord Carysford with the title, ‘Cupid untying the zone of Venus’, today at the Hermitage, St. Petersburg. The model for Venus was Emma Hart, the wife of Sir William Hamilton and mistress of Admiral Nelson.
