Eduard Julyus Friedrich Bendemann, Berlin 1811–1889 Düsseldorf, study at Academy of Arts in Berlin, in 1828 to Düsseldorf to study at Schadow’s school, in 1830 he travelled with him to Italy, painted this image in 1833 on his return from his long visit to Italy; he is one of the most important exponents of the Düsseldorf School of painting; he was a monumental painter, a portraitist and a book illustrator, in 1859 he took over the directorship of the Düsseldorf Academy of Arts from Wilhelm Schadow; he found the inspiration for his painting in one of the most famous images of German Romanticism: ‘Italia and Germania’ by Johann Friedrich Overbeck, Lübeck 1789–1869 Rome, today in the Neue Pinakothek, Munich; variants of this image include ‘The two Leonoras’ by Carl Ferdinand Sohn, 1836, amongst others;
