Phillip Jakob Straub, attributed - Works of Art (Furniture, Sculpture)

(1706–1774 Graz) attributed, St. Zacharias, ca. 1740. Phillip Jakob Straub came from a family of artists, his father Johann Georg Straub as well as his brothers Johann Baptist, Johann Georg and Joseph were also active as sculptors and received their initial education from their father. Phillip Jakob studied from 1730–33 with Johann Christoph Mader at the Academy in Vienna and moved in 1733 to Graz where he died in 1774. With Veit Königer and Josef Thaddäus Stammel he is one of the most important baroque sculptors of Styria. In 1750/52 his nephew Franz Xaver Messerschmidt worked with him. Phillip Jakob shares with his brother Johann Baptist Straub (1704 – 1784 Munich, his best-known pupil was Ignaz Günther) a certain related language of form which is evident in this St. Zacharias mainly in his expressive face and flowing beard.

The sculpture is a masterly carving in lime wood, back hollowed, original polychrome painting and gilding, hands from later period, height 181 cm, (MC)
