Circle of Roentgen 18th century. Made in lavish rosewood marquetry over oak in a lozenge mosaic pattern in the style of Roentgen, set on cabriole legs, the two-part top and frieze with similar lozenge marquetry, the crossbanding of the top also in rosewood veneer, with a high quality clover leaf and key pattern. The table also has a pin cushion, compartments, lateral drawers which open by means of a spring mechanism in the knob, two sham drawers and gilt bronze mounts. 71.5 x 44 x 44 cm. Inscribed twice on the underside of the drawer “SAR” (Son Altesse Royale). Professionally restored condition. (DOC)
An outstanding piece, which suggests the work of Roentgen or his circle. The dimensions of the lozenge mosaic decoration correspond exactly to those of the mosaic intarsia developed by Abraham Roentgen in London, known as the 3rd order, with narrow latticework using rosewood.
