Aphrodite,
18th century copy after the antique “Aphrodite au pilier” at the Louvre. A fully carved Carrara marble figure of a woman leaning against a column. Height 130 cm. The arms damaged, some losses, restored breaks on the neck. (MC)
The Roman statue “Aphrodite au pilier” dates from the Imperial period 1-2 century AD and was inspired by the Greek Aphrodite of the sculptor Alcamenes from the late 5th century BC. The statue from the collection of Louis XIV was erroneously interpreted in the 17th century as the muse Euterpe and thus restored. A cast from this interpretation is still in the Louvre. The statue was later restored back to its original configuration and the additional elements removed.
