Splendid High Baroque vestry cabinet,
Originally Austria, circa 1740. A three-part cabinet made in walnut veneer over spruce, decorated with maple and dyed pearwood marquetry, partly painted in India ink. The cabinet has a richly shaped lower section with twist turned columns at the angles, three drawers at the front and six at the sides, two doors, a pull-out kneeling ledge and a central section with fall front, interior drawers and secret compartments. The upper section has tabernacle door flanked by four drawers, with a pierced and gold-painted panel and a wax inlay “Maria mit dem Kinde” (Madonna and Child), also fabric lined open compartments and a canopy-like cornice with a splendidly carved and gold painted crest. 255 x 130 x 75 cm. Parts removed in the course of several restorations, also altered and heavily restored. Restored condition. (PZ)
