1: A wrapover skirt (‘Tapis’) from southern Sumatra, Lampung district. Fabric foundation: Cotton, dyed blue, brown and black in twelve diagonal stripes. Elaborately embroidered with gold and silver threads (wrapped silk threads) and sequins: with rectangular areas and inner zigzag structure, alternating with floral and dragon motifs. An old piece with minor age-related damage. First third of the 20th century; dimensions: 118 cm x 134 cm.
2: A Minangkabau shawl, West Sumatra. Fabric foundation: red silk with white, blue and black stripes. Areas with woven gold thread pattern (‘paper gold’ stripes wrapped around silk threads): small squares and rhombs, as well as a wide diagonal band with triangular 'Tumpal’ motifs. Perfect condition. First half of the 20th century; dimensions: c. 200 cm x 122 cm.
3: A shawl from South Sumatra, Palembang district or Island of Bangka. Fabric foundation: red silk with white woven border stripes on the short sides (insert-weaving). With four diagonal stripes made of woven gold threads in leafy and floral tendrils. The centre is dyed in ‘Ikat’ technique with floral border stripes and spikes (red, white, grey-blue). Very good condition, a small hole on the edge. Early 20th century; dimensions: 218 cm x 85 cm.
4: A Minangkabau wrapover skirt (‘sarong’), West Sumatra. Fabric foundation: red silk with delicate white, blue and black stripes in rectangular plaid. The frontal central field and upper end stripes are densely patterned with gold threads. With floral motifs and edge spikes. Good condition, one small hole. First third of the 20th century; dimensions: 165 cm x 86 cm. (ME)
